Software Developer Salary in Kenya 2026: 60K–500K KES

· Kazi

A software developer in Kenya earns between KES 60,000 and KES 500,000 a month, depending on experience, stack and the kind of employer. Nairobi is East Africa's technology hub — the Silicon Savannah — and that concentration explains both the depth of the market and the gap between local employers and the international organisations headquartered in the city.

This page gives the real ranges, what moves them, and how to position yourself without underselling.

Pay by experience level

Level Experience Gross monthly salary
Junior 0–2 years KES 60,000 – 100,000
Mid-level 3–6 years KES 120,000 – 250,000
Senior / lead 7 years and up KES 280,000 – 500,000

For context: the minimum wage for an unskilled labourer is KES 16,114 a month in Group A cities, which include Nairobi and Mombasa, under the Regulation of Wages Orders published in Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 128 on 29 May 2026, effective 1 May 2026. A junior developer therefore starts at close to four times that floor, and a senior at more than thirty times.

What it looks like by employer

Local companies and agencies. Bottom of the range. The role is broad and you learn fast, but budgets cap progression quickly.

Funded Kenyan startups. The heart of the Nairobi ecosystem, especially in fintech and agritech. Pay sits above the local market, sometimes with an equity component. The pace is demanding and stability follows funding cycles.

Banks and financial services. Top of the range for mid-level and senior roles. Kenya pioneered mobile money, which created lasting demand for transaction and security skills.

NGOs and international organisations. Nairobi hosts an unusually large number of regional headquarters and UN agencies, which makes it a deep market for IT profiles. These roles are often among the best paid locally and are sometimes pegged to foreign currency.

Remote work for overseas clients. The highest ceiling. English is an official language and the time zone works for both Europe and much of Asia, so Kenyan developers reach international platforms and clients more easily than most of the continent.

What moves the number

English as a working language. It removes the barrier that limits other African markets and opens direct access to British and American clients and to international organisations.

Mobile money experience. Kenya is the global reference market here. Having worked on mobile payment integrations, compliance or fraud prevention is a strong salary differentiator — and it travels well beyond the country.

Your stack. JavaScript and React, Node, Python, Java and cloud skills pull upward. DevOps, data and cybersecurity profiles stay scarce and well paid.

Proximity to the international sector. Working for an NGO or an international agency based in Nairobi often changes the pay scale entirely, in exchange for heavier reporting and compliance requirements.

A public portfolio. An active GitHub and visible contributions count for more than a degree, especially for international work.

Nairobi versus the rest of the country. Most tech roles are concentrated in Nairobi, with Mombasa a distant second. The cost of living there is also the highest in Kenya.

What to check before you sign

  • NSSF contributions and health cover. Confirm the employer actually remits them, and how far the cover extends.
  • Contract currency. On NGO and international roles, pay pegged to a foreign currency changes your real income over time.
  • Funding runway at a startup. Asking is legitimate and tells you a lot.
  • Equity, if offered. Share count, valuation and vesting schedule must be in writing, or the promise is worth nothing.
  • Connectivity and equipment. Worth clarifying, especially for partly remote roles.
  • Remote days. Given Nairobi traffic, the number of days you work from home has real value.

How to negotiate

Name a precise figure, never a range.

Anchor on measurable impact. "I cut transaction failure rates from 5% to 1%" is worth more than a list of technologies.

Lead with any mobile money experience. It is the most distinctive skill on the Kenyan market and it is negotiable.

Ask for currency pegging on international roles — it is often easier to obtain than a higher headline number.

Put a number on the benefits. Health cover, transport, connectivity and remote days are a real part of the package.

How to move up

  1. Specialise in mobile money and fintech. It is the most exportable advantage the Kenyan market offers.
  2. Target Nairobi's international organisations. The pool is exceptionally large and pay sits above the local market.
  3. Build international visibility to reach remote work paid in foreign currency.
  4. Move to lead or architect, the step that technical skill alone does not unlock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary for a junior developer in Kenya? Between KES 60,000 and KES 100,000 a month. Funded startups and international organisations start above that.

Why is Nairobi called the Silicon Savannah? Because it holds East Africa's densest tech ecosystem: startups, incubators, regional headquarters of international organisations, and the pioneers of mobile money.

Is mobile money experience really valued? Yes. It is the most distinctive specialisation on the Kenyan market, and it commands a premium well beyond the country's borders.

Do you need a degree to work as a developer in Kenya? No. Portfolio and technical tests come first. A degree still helps for banking roles and some international organisations.

Is the salary negotiable? Yes, particularly at mid-level and above, where local and international demand exceeds the available supply.
